about

"When the Time Comes" is the latest release from Istanbul based Sumatran Black Records, and the third album of Sumatran Black drone side-project Ataşehir.

As with previous Ataşehir releases we are once again exploring the emotions and sensations of modern Istanbul. But here we also have a hint of an enigmatic shadowy near future brought about by some kind of mysterious event.

Plaintive drone textures and evocative half heard distant melodies conjure up various images of structures, landmarks and intimate moments.

Featuring both locations from the present day, and some that are yet to exist. (see location guide below) the album is a natural sister piece to "Colorful Places to Live and Play".

This album has been intentionally mastered at a low volume level as to encourage the listener to incorporate the ambient sounds from their own listening environment.

Location guide:

Ataşehir is a real location. The “New Ataşehir” described here is fictional.

Levent 4 is a real location and is the central business district in Istanbul. There is no Levent 4.2 or maglev train.

The Kozyatağı Metro is a real location.

The third bridge is a real location and is known colloquially as the third bridge. Its actual name, however, is the Yavuz Sultan Selim bridge.

Beşiktaş İskelesi is a real location.

The Avrasya Tunel is a real location.

Sakız Sokak is a real location and is where the album was written and recorded. No flying vehicles yet.

E5 is a real highway but to find it deserted is highly unlikely. On a map it's designated as D-100. I have never heard anyone use this name.

The Kanal Istanbul Project is a proposed project to connect the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea in order to relieve ship traffic on the Bosporus.

Kadıköy Rıhtım is a real location.

The Çamlıca Antenna is a real landmark but it has a rather long and less poetic name, “The Küçük Çamlıca TV Radio Tower (Küçük Çamlıca Televizyon ve Radyo Kulesi)”

Thanks to Sırcan Abdullah for the location fact checking.
